Background:
Christos Carras was born in London (UK) in 1962. He studied philosophy at Cambridge University and then earned his PhD from the University of Paris I – Sorbonne (1989).  From 2000 onwards, he has been working in the cultural sector. In 2006 he became General Manager of the B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music.  From 2009 to 2022 he served as the Executive Director of the Onassis Cultural Centre (Onassis Stegi). He was responsible for the music program and other interdisciplinary projects, developing European cultural collaboration networks, and the sustainability strategy of the Centre. He continues to collaborate with the Onassis Foundation as a Senior Consultant for Sustainability. He was the coordinator of a large-scale study of the social and economic impact of the CCSs in Greece commissioned by the think-tank DiaNEOsis, completed in 2023. Since October 2022 he has been a Senior Associate with AEA Consulting.

As a cultural professional his focus areas are the role of culture in promoting sustainable development, interdisciplinarity and innovation in the cultural sector, mapping, understanding and evaluating the impact of culture, cultivating collaborative cultural networks. He is a GRI certified sustainability professional.

His research interests and publications include the aesthetics of contemporary sonic art, the role of art within broader networks and fields, the politics of cultural production and consumption and sustainability.
