2023 Koumaria Residency Blog 10

This year’s Koumaria Residency welcomed mostly female artists.

We have observed a plethora of themes and narratives emerge from the artists that deal with femininity and the experiences of being a woman in today’s world. Xenia Papadopoulou, using materials found around the Aloni, builds this grand structure – a Maypole. During the Scandinavian spring, this structure is danced around, celebrating new life and fertility.
Our own residents danced around in a therapeutic harmony of voices, clapping and stomping. This playful dance around the Maypole turned into a ritual, strengthening the bonds between our residents, in honour of their shared experience as women.
